DCBIA Community Day

The District of Columbia Building Industry Association (DCBIA) has a long history of partnering with local volunteer businesses and residents in order to renovate and improve community resources. This year's Community Improvement Day event marked twenty years of renovation services brought to community facilities in the District.

The target this year was the Congress Heights Recreation Center in southeast D.C., which was in great need of renovation and renewal. The volunteer turnout was a record breaker, with over 600 people in attendance. DCBIA's Community Day has always been an important event to our industry, and this year was no exception. Support came from all of Washington D.C.'s top developers, architects, and general contractors. Renovations included a new site entry, new landscaping features, a pavilion and picnic shelters, a terraced community garden, as well as playground repairs and upgrades.

As we have for the last three consecutive years, Harvey-Cleary took a leadership role in the event. In addition to heading two of the six areas of work (exterior signage and rehabilitation of an existing clubhouse), Pete Torres and Matthew Armentrout served as the event's construction co-chairs. As construction co-chairs, Matt and Pete were responsible for managing the dozens of architects throughout the design process to ensure the project fell within budget, managing the other general contractors who had volunteered to oversee construction of the remaining work areas, organizing logistics and delivery of materials, soliciting donations for materials and equipment, and ensuring the overall completion of the project. This was also Greg "Rambo" Pascarella's third year being the volunteer event's general superintendent, overseeing the preparatory work during the days leading up to the event, and staying behind after the event to ensure the loose ends were wrapped up. Pete, Matt, and Rambo did a great job representing Harvey-Cleary at this event, as did the others who volunteered their time, including Brian Tostenson, Chuck Green, Doug Koch, Jeff Guy, Jerry Wahl, Jim MacDonald, Jim McGrath, Kevin Rogge, Matt DeGourse, Matt Mitchell, Patrick O'Malley, Peter Chicoine, Randy Wahl, Rusty Gorman, and Ryan O'Donnell.
